{"id":42,"date":"2008-09-13T15:01:34","date_gmt":"2008-09-13T20:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=42"},"modified":"2009-04-07T04:56:28","modified_gmt":"2009-04-07T11:56:28","slug":"the-art-of-the-long-view","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=42","title":{"rendered":"The Art of the Long View"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I read this to learn more about scenario planning.\u00a0  Peter Schwartz&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0385267320?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=relaxandhavef-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0385267320\">The Art of the Long View: Planning for the Future in an Uncertain World<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=relaxandhavef-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0385267320\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/> is a very interesting introduction to this type of preparing for what may come.\u00a0 Schwartz teaches with examples from <a title=\"Schwartz GBN\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gbn.com\/PersonBioDisplayServlet.srv?pi=23910\" target=\"_blank\">his own work<\/a> with companies large and small.\u00a0 If I understand it correctly, the main idea is to create a few different scenarios about how things could work out (on any timescale, for any purpose) and then for each of those scenarios identify key indicators so you&#8217;ll know if they&#8217;re actually happening and, of course, planned courses of action in response to the scenario.<\/p>\n<p>Schwartz takes a lot of care to explain why scenario planning is useful, why it&#8217;s not psychologically accepted by many corporations\/humans, what can be done to increase the chances of acceptance of scenario planning and how to make the responses to the scenarios effective.\u00a0\u00a0 His writing style is pleasing and it&#8217;s pretty easy to imagine that you&#8217;re listening to him carefully explain all this to you.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll definitely check out some of his more recent works (this book was published in 1991) to see where he&#8217;s gone with his thinking\/working lately.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read this to learn more about scenario planning.
