{"id":56,"date":"2009-01-04T12:49:47","date_gmt":"2009-01-04T17:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=56"},"modified":"2009-04-06T19:45:46","modified_gmt":"2009-04-07T02:45:46","slug":"the-world-is-flat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=56","title":{"rendered":"The World Is Flat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><meta name=\"verify-v1\" content=\"2xMOZMLLcONQNNF4hVyKElCPXDcOOtb2Ap5Dv\/tLaj4=\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our book club is discussing Thomas Friedman&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0312425074?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=relaxandhavef-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0312425074\">The World Is Flat 3.0: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=relaxandhavef-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0312425074\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TWIF<\/span>) this month.\u00a0 I read the 2005 edition of the book, so I&#8217;m not sure about the contents of the 2.0 and 3.0 updates.\u00a0 The first half of the book describes ten &#8220;flatteners&#8221; that have caused this flattened world and defines the effects of the convergence of the most important flatteners.\u00a0 By the way, the whole flat earth metaphor is derived from the image of a leveled playing field, not from our old understanding of geography.\u00a0 The third quarter of the book covers the consequences that affect America, the risks that face America, and suggestions on what America can do to thrive in the flattened world.\u00a0 As energizing as the first half of the book was, this part was terrifying.\u00a0 The last part of the book covers the responses and challenges of the rest of the world to a flattened world, reviews general business approaches to a flattened world, warns of the danger of the presence of unflattened parts of the world, and closes with recommendations on how to keep peace in a flattening world.<\/p>\n<p>This book and its author are very popular, and there are lots and lots of web resources about them both.\u00a0 The <a title=\"Wiki page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_World_is_Flat\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TWIF<\/span>&#8216;s Wikipedia page<\/a> is a nice place to start if you&#8217;d like to learn more about the contents and read Friedman&#8217;s critics too.\u00a0 <a title=\"TF's website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thomaslfriedman.com\/bookshelf\/the-world-is-flat\" target=\"_blank\">Friedman&#8217;s website<\/a> includes product plugs and links to many <em>NY Times<\/em> articles.\u00a0 To jump right into the world of those not enamored with Friedman, see this <a title=\"anti-Friedman review\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nypress.com\/article-11419-flathead.html\" target=\"_blank\">review of the first edition<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Meanwhile, <a title=\"Zakaria review\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/05\/01\/books\/review\/01ZAKARIA.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fareed\u00a0 Zakaria&#8217;s review<\/a> is probably much easier to swallow for Flatheads.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s nice to finely get around to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TWIF<\/span>, after the digs taken at it and at Friedman by Amy Chua in her <a title=\"World on Fire post\" href=\"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=41\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">World on Fire<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Considering last fall&#8217;s discussion of Chua, the enthusiasm of Friedman&#8217;s Fan Club, the critical responses to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TWIF<\/span> and the importance of the core issues, we should have a very interesting discussion this month.\u00a0 My general response to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TWIF<\/span> is similar to my response to Nye&#8217;s <a title=\"Soft Power post\" href=\"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=33\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Soft Power<\/span><\/a>:\u00a0 I learned something from it, but the greater value probably lies in knowing more about what everyone is talking about and the potential mental stimulation that comes with that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Our book club is discussing Thomas Friedman&#8217;s The World Is Flat 3.0: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century (TWIF) this month.
