{"id":61,"date":"2009-02-05T12:12:05","date_gmt":"2009-02-05T17:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=61"},"modified":"2009-04-06T19:45:14","modified_gmt":"2009-04-07T02:45:14","slug":"the-new-case-against-immigration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=61","title":{"rendered":"The New Case Against Immigration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our book club selection for February is Mark Krikorian&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001KVZ6RA?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=relaxandhavef-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B001KVZ6RA\">The New Case Against Immigration: Both Legal and Illegal<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=relaxandhavef-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001KVZ6RA\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>.\u00a0 Krikorian is the executive director of the <a title=\"CIS homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cis.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Immigration Studies<\/a> (CIS) and the grandson of immigrants himself.\u00a0 He argues that today&#8217;s mass immigration is not good for today&#8217;s America.\u00a0 Our current immigration situation and policy have caused a &#8220;cracked melting pot&#8221; that leads to transnationalism, multiculturalism and post-Americanism (all bad things in his context) which drastically decrease the likelihood of necessary assimilation.\u00a0 Beyond just the assimilation problem, today&#8217;s mass immigration erodes American sovereignty, decreases national security, damages our economy, skews government spending and disrupts our otherwise nationally-selected population growth patterns.<\/p>\n<p>His closing chapter defines &#8220;<em>a blueprint for a modern American immigration policy:\u00a0 a firm commitment to reducing the illegal population over time and keeping it low; a level of legal immigration, built up from zero, which is still quite high, perhaps four hundred thousand per year, though likely to decline as time passes; a temporary visa system that welcomes the legitimate visitor but is not a means to sidestep the immigration laws; and pro-immigrant measures to offer a warmer welcome to those we admit as our future countrymen<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The New Case Against Immigration<\/span> has extensive end notes and is a fairly quick read coming in at under 250 pages of text, although Krikorian&#8217;s tone sometimes struck me as mean.\u00a0 My colleagues should find the criticisms of the State Department and of DHS particularly thought-provoking.\u00a0 For some mixed insights into Krikorian and CIS, here&#8217;s an <a title=\"Krikorian BookTV interview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.booktv.org\/watch.aspx?ProgramId=FV-9675\" target=\"_blank\">interview with Krikorian<\/a> on BookTV, a<a title=\"lengthier book review\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newenglishreview.org\/custpage.cfm\/frm\/23787\/sec_id\/23787\" target=\"_blank\"> lengthier review<\/a> of the book, a <a title=\"criticism of CIS\" href=\"http:\/\/imagine2050.newcomm.org\/2008\/10\/02\/anti-immigrant-organization-with-ties-to-white-nationalism-releases-report-on-gang-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\">criticism of CIS<\/a> from Imagine 2050, an <a title=\"Krikorian on Chua\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/12\/18\/AR2007121801183.html\" target=\"_blank\">article by Krikorian on Amy Chua<\/a> (see her <a title=\"World on Fire post\" href=\"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=41\" target=\"_self\">World on Fire here at RAHF<\/a>), and a <a title=\"CIS profile\" href=\"http:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/transborderproject\/center-for-immigration-studies\" target=\"_blank\">profile of CIS<\/a> from the TransBorder Project.<\/p>\n<p>Our little book club (predominately elitists per Krikorian&#8217;s definition) should have an interesting meeting this month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our book club selection for February is Mark Krikorian&#8217;s The New Case Against Immigration: Both Legal and Illegal.
