{"id":834,"date":"2010-11-08T00:23:51","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T06:23:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=834"},"modified":"2010-11-13T01:29:52","modified_gmt":"2010-11-13T07:29:52","slug":"peddling-prosperity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/?p=834","title":{"rendered":"Peddling Prosperity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Peddling Prosperity\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0393312925?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=relaxandhavef-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0393312925\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-836\" title=\"Peddling Prosperity\" src=\"http:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/wp-content\/51fDHVNcRcL._SL160_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"107\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/wp-content\/51fDHVNcRcL._SL160_.jpg 107w, https:\/\/relaxandhavefun.com\/wp-content\/51fDHVNcRcL._SL160_-100x150.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 107px) 100vw, 107px\" \/><\/a> I have been accused of having a man-crush on <a title=\"Krugman's NYT blog\" href=\"http:\/\/krugman.blogs.nytimes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Krugman<\/a>.\u00a0 So sue me.\u00a0 He just writes so darned clearly.<\/p>\n<p>I backtracked chronologically to read <a title=\"Peddling Prosperity\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0393312925?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=relaxandhavef-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0393312925\" target=\"_blank\">Peddling Prosperity<\/a> because I wanted to understand the differences amongst Keynesians, Monetarists, Supply-Siders and others.\u00a0 Check.\u00a0 This book was written at the beginning of the first Clinton administration and covers the rise of conservative economic ideology, the record of conservatism in power and then the revival of Keynesianism.\u00a0 In addition to describing Keynesianism and Monetarism, Krugman&#8217;s goal is to differentiate between actual economists and mere policy entrepreneurs.\u00a0 So the reader learns about the economic definitions and histories of Keynesianism and Monetarists, and then about the rise of Supply-Siders and later their liberal counterparts, the Strategic Traders.\u00a0 As an economics hobbyist trying to get my arms around the subject in general, I found the book very eye-opening.\u00a0 I wish I had read it earlier in the stream of economics titles I&#8217;m reading, both for the historical descriptions of schools of thought and because I think it may have improved my ability to discern the values and motivations of some other writers (Krugman included).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a title=\"Neubauer review\" href=\"http:\/\/home.teleport.com\/~neubauer\/krugman.html\" target=\"_blank\">positive review <\/a>with more details on the content, a <a title=\"Dodd review\" href=\"http:\/\/www.financialpolicy.org\/dsckrugman1994.htm\" target=\"_blank\">critical review<\/a> from a member of the Democratic Study Group, and a <a title=\"Kuttner's Peddling Krugman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospect.org\/cs\/articles?article=peddling_krugman\" target=\"_blank\">longer critique<\/a> of Krugman&#8217;s critiques of Policy Entrepreneurs over the course of several books.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> I have been accused of having a man-crush on Paul Krugman.
